Henna Body Art

The ingredients of henna paste and how it is made:

  • Water
  • Henna Powder
  • Lemon Juice
  • Olive Oil
Good henna powder is as fine as baby powder, free of lumps or tiny leaves or sticks and it should smell like fresh herbs with a bright green color. Henna that is too light green, brown or gray is not of high quality.
Put the henna powder in a bowl and add a few drops of oil. Add boiled water slowly and keep mixing until paste is smooth. Let it sit for several hours or overnight before using, keeping it in an airtight container. Add a little water water or olive oil later as the henna powder absorbs the water. You want it to be soft and smooth but not liquid.
The paste can be squeezed from the applicator bottle. A small wooden stick, a stiff brush or even a toothpick can be also used for fine detail. Stencil are also used. If you are using them do not lift the stencil for ten minutes so the paste can dry. The paste needs to stay on skin at least for two to three hours. Henna temporary tattooes will last from one to four weeks depending on the quality of the henna dye and skillset of the artist. The design gets darker the following twenty four hours as it is exposed to air and sun. Try not washing the are for the first two days if possible.
In addition to being a cosmetic, henna has been used for medicinal purposes. It is said to be beneficial to use in cases of small pox, local burns, nail cracks, blisters, pimples, and skin pustules between the legs.
